It's important to raise awareness that not all autistic children exhibit the more commonly recognized behaviors like hand flapping, rocking, or spinning. Many children, like Michael, may not exhibit the common visible traits. However, one of the most noticeable traits for Michael, is his need for a pacifier. Continued use of a pacifier by an autistic child is rather a beneficial tool that can help them regulate their sensory systems and reduce stress. Often, children on the autism spectrum will use their mouths to explore their environment, to self-regulate & cope with sensory overload or needs. Mouthing objects can pose a danger to their safety, as the object could contain harmful chemicals or be a choking hazard. Michael is also a severe chewer — but does not have Pica. And so, Pacifiers provides that sensory stimulation, while also being safe to put in his mouth — and most times, it even acts like a “stopper” to prevent him from mouthing harmful objects.
