Allowing Michael to safely explore potentially dangerous things like using a gas stove under close supervision provides numerous benefits and can be a highly constructive and educational experience for him. Participating in these activities together strengthens our trust and communication, as he learns to rely on me for guidance and support when his curiosity drives him to engage in such activities. Supervised exposure to potential dangers also teaches him crucial skills in risk assessment and management, essential for making independent decisions. Moreover, engaging him in learning about things that pique his interest, even if they pose risks, fosters a love of learning and cultivates a curious and inquisitive mindset. Most importantly, this approach teaches him the significance of safety and caution, instilling a sense of responsibility in managing potential dangers responsibly. Now more than ever, we're particularly vigilant with supervision, as he's exploring his surroundings more thoroughly and his curiosity and interests lead him to places and objects that can be dangerous or unsafe. 👑 Daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our IG Subscribers Page 👑 ⚠️ This is a glimpse into our journey with my nonspeaking autistic son, documenting his progress, and offering insights for anyone who may benefit, learn, or find inspiration. ⚠️ When my son experiences intense emotions, I give him space and wait until he's ready for affection. Our communication and co-regulation approach is well-considered and fits our situation. #heartwarming #heartbreak #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage
01:29For many, this might seem like an ordinary moment, but in our family, we're celebrating it as something extraordinary. It's the moment where Michael is actively asking me to teach him new words. Michael now knows over 500 ASL words to communicate his wants and needs, though his usage is often prompted. And so, the significance of this moment lies not just in the spontaneity of his request, but also in that it marks our first meaningful back-and-forth conversation on a topic of his shared interest. For this post, I could detail all the observations, insights, and my personal approach to educating and providing therapy for my son that have brought him to this point. However, I'll simply leave this here to permanently mark yet another turning point in his autism journey. 👑 However, you can find our daily approach to education and therapy, along with exclusive updates, on our Subscribers Page 👑 #heartwarming #hearttouching #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #foryou #fyp #explorepage #viral
04:34Traveling offers a rich mix of sensory, physical, and cognitive stimulation that simply can't be replicated in a controlled setting. While conducting therapy and education in real-life environments can be unpredictable and often more challenging than in controlled settings, we do our due diligence to plan, prepare, adapt, and embrace each situation as it comes. Yet, it’s precisely the unpredictability of our experiences that has significantly accelerated Michael's progress. This is where our collective ability to adapt and adjust becomes crucial in supporting his needs. 📌Our focus is on identifying and addressing challenges as they arise, and intervening as early in his life as possible. And we cannot identify these challenges without exposing ourselves to the full spectrum of life experiences, which can be overwhelming in both positive and negative ways. However, this exposure is necessary not only for understanding and addressing his needs effectively but also for helping him navigate and adapt to the complexities of the world around him, in practical and meaningfully ways. This is where traveling itself has become the most effective therapy and education for Michael, offering unique benefits that no program, institution, or professional service can replicate in a controlled, scheduled environment. And this is why I’ve embraced exposure as the foundation of Michael’s therapy and education. Although we fly only 2-3 times a year, each journey over the past four years has taught us something new about Michael—his emerging abilities, capabilities, and personality, all of which contribute to his the key developmental milestones he has reached today Each month, we make a concerted effort to explore somewhere new, whether it's a local destination or somewhere further away, to continue enriching his experiences. 👑 The full mini-vlog & insights of our flight experiences and New York adventures, on IG Subscriber’ Page. #heartwarming #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto
01:30Michael is capable of eating while seated at a table and even demonstrates good manners in fine dining environments. This isn’t because we strictly enforce seated dining at home. Rather, we give him the freedom to move around at home while practicing seated dining in public spaces. This way, he often enjoys the activities he is focused on so much that he doesn't protest his meals and finishes them completely. Additionally, as long as the food is appealing, Michael will eat a variety of foods that many children typically resist, such as super greens, mushrooms, onions, and garlic. This is all made possible by allowing for movement into mealtime, which has continued to help expand his palate with these challenging foods under the guise of fun. 📌Understanding the direction of turning wheels and or using a cart to push and pull significantly helped in developing direction perspective skills in Michael. These activities require him to maneuver the cart in various directions, which reinforces his understanding of spatial relationships and directionality. By actively choosing to turn left, right, push forward, or pull backward, he learns to anticipate and execute movements relative to his environment. This hands-on experience is crucial in helping him grasp concepts like map reading, following directions, and participating in spatially oriented activities such as sports and dancing. As he makes decisions about movement and observe the outcomes, he also becomes more adept at using environmental clues and landmarks, enhancing his navigational skills and cognitive development. 📌Michael gets at least three hours of physical exercise daily. A moving body stimulates a moving mind. Additionally, the physical exercises we naturally engage in help address any primitive reflexes he hasn't outgrown. Whether he's playing in his playground, running outside or inside, or interacting with everyday objects like carts and cars, he's actively lifting, climbing, pushing, and pulling. He's also eating and having fun connecting with us all at the same time. #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto
01:03At the start of our potty training journey, Michael would always come with me to the bathroom. I demonstrated how it’s used, familiarized him with the sound of flushing, and made him comfortable being in the bathroom with me. Aside from our pretend-play related to using the bathroom… 👉🏻 Initially, I tried so many different marketed baby toilets / urinals for him, but he’s outgrown them and the cleanup was an extra hassle. 🥤Now, for pee, I simply use a plastic disposable cup, which I flush, rinse and reuse at home. Switching to a generic plastic cup has been very practical, especially when we’re out and traveling too. I can easily get a free plastic cup anywhere, use it on the go, and then dispose of it. Also, Michael isn’t tall enough for public toilets, and I prefer not to have him use/touch toilets directly. I use a plastic cup inside the restroom stalls! 😮💨 Regressions: Although Michael has made several successful trips to the toilet, recently, he has started showing noticeable distress — an unexpected setback. But that’s okay, we’re going back to the basics of modeling once again, focusing on simple exposures such as encouraging him to watch the flushing action. 👑 Details on our approach to potty training and more updates are on Subscribers’ Page 👑. #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #pottytraining
01:26This is a commenter from my last Playground video post, and I’m well aware comments like this will continue to come up often. However, for those open to listening and learning, this situation highlights one of the many benefits of recordings serve for our family: 👉🏻Not only are they essential for understanding Michael, finding ways to teach, provide better support, and monitor his communication progress and well-being. Another case in point are for Security: 👉🏻If my son, who is bigger than the other boy, were to defend himself physically and inadvertently harm the boy, who would speak up for his side of the story? The other boy is capable of speaking and advocating for himself, and when adults intervene, he will be able to tell his side of the story. ❓What information will Michael be able to provide… ❓What would likely unfold when the smaller, crying child tells their parent a story that places blame on Michael… ❓Now, consider that these are young 4-year-olds at play. What would happen if they were 10-year-olds instead? 👉🏻Michael cannot advocate for himself or explain the circumstances of an incident—such as how, who, what, when, where and why it occurred. 🪖And so parents, like me, often prepare far more extensively than most when venturing into public spaces. 🗣️We do our best to serve as our children's voice, their advocate, and defend them against the challenges they might inadvertently face. 👉🏻 If my way of going about that makes some people feel "awkward," that’s beyond my concern. (📝Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read what I share 🤟🏻) 👑 Further details and insights into my approach to parenting, education, therapy & more on the IG Subscribers’ Page 👑 #heartbreak #emotional #sad #challenges #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #education #homeschooling #unschooling #bekind
01:56⚠️This 🎥 focuses on co-regulation. If it's not your cup of tea, keep scrolling. Michael becomes withdrawn or resorts to silent cries when he finds it challenging to articulate his feelings or intentions; unmanageable tantrums have not been a part of our experience with him. However, more recently, Michael had been expressing his emotions—whether frustration, anger, or excitement—by throwing objects he is holding. Determining if these actions were voluntary or involuntary was a critical initial step. This differentiation is vital, as some people may not have complete control over their physical reactions, leading to unintentional, involuntary behaviors. However, in Michael’s situation, though the exact motivations behind his behavior remain unclear, his actions are deliberate. And so, I have been focusing on identifying supportive outlets for Michael’s emotional expressions. By closely monitoring and documenting the precursors to his behaviors, I hope to uncover more affirmative ways for him to articulate his emotions — even in the face of challenges with language and speech. A crucial element of my approach is the choice to remain calm and avoid yelling, even as boundaries are challenged. This is essential in navigating our shared emotional co-regulation, particularly given Michael's deep awareness, perception, and sensitivity to emotional cues. 👑Further details and insights into my approach are available in the Social Broadcast Chat-box on the IG Subscribers’ Page👑 #sad #emotional #heartwarming #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #education #homeschooling #unschooling
01:29And that's it—the Total Solar Eclipse 🌎🌑event has come to an end, and what an incredible journey it was! 📣A big shoutout to Frontiers of Flight Museum for offering Michael such a remarkable opportunity. We're looking forward to participating in future programs and events that will enrich Michael's educational and therapeutic experiences 🤟🏻🙏🏻. 👑For our homeschooling, unschooling, and roadschooling approach, the details are shared on our IG Subscribers' Page👑 Plus, dive into discussions within our community in our exclusive Social Channel Chat-box 🗣️💬. #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #education #homeschooling #unschooling #solareclipse #museum
01:30We're thrilled about tomorrow, though unsure how Michael will react, given it's expected to be a full-capacity, eventful affair. @frontiersofflightmuseum To accommodate, we've secured a nearby hotel room, providing Michael a quiet space to retreat to if the event becomes overwhelming, allowing us the flexibility to take a break and try again as needed. Michael is currently overjoyed with #roadschooling ; he's learning to appreciate the thrill of learning through the unexpected experiences we organize for him. His current enthusiasm for exploring new hotel environments stems from an early intervention strategy we adopted to nurture his curiosity and adaptability. The gradual exposure approach has effectively provided him with a gentle acclimation to new environments, unfamiliar individuals, and a spectrum of sensory experiences, all in a managed, yet authentic, real-world context. We plan to continue applying these strategies across different scenarios, aiming to render each experience as enriching, manageable, and as directly applicable to him as possible. Such learning simply can't be replicated in a traditional classroom setting through theoretical instructions and simulated play; it necessitates real-life experiences. The sooner these are encountered, the more profound and lasting their impact. 👑The details of our day and activities on the Subscribers’ Page👑 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #education #homeschooling #unschooling #solareclipse #museummoment
01:29In fostering Michael’s inclination to imitate, communicate, interact, and use ASL purposefully, the key lies in consistently honoring his requests. This applies as long as it’s a matter of personal inconvenience to me and not a safety issue or a significant inconvenience to others. An example is our differing preferences at night: I prefer dim lighting to unwind, while he enjoys bright lights for his nighttime activities. When Michael made effort to used an ASL word — lights — I honor his request to turn on those bright lights I am inclined to say No to. The more Michael associates communication as a positive outcome to have his needs and wants met, the more he is inclined to use them. 🔐Michael’s practice of asking for permission was a skill we fostered and nurtured from an early age, carefully balancing the act of granting permissions while teaching and practicing boundaries at the same time. 👉🏻In our approach, teaching new words in sign language doesn’t take place at a desk or at set times. It unfolds continuously, day and night, with a focus on words chosen according to his needs and desires. That’s why he has much freedom for movement and exploring at home. Our everyday life is filled with functional vocabulary words that are most meaningful and relevant for him to learn, use, and practice on a daily basis. 👑 Full Mini-vlogs of our personalized approach and insights on IG Subscribers’ Page 👑 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #howto #education #progress
