#stitch with @Guy this is a fantastic case study to go over and demystify what we mean by "waste". Push pull method is recommended in the INS guidelines however, our technique for returning that blood will make a difference in infection risk. Domas and hemolysis is not a concern as it will be negligible at the tip of the catheter, however contaminating that tip is a real risk and needs to be mitigated as much as possible. Using manifold to perform the push method or directly from the catheter hub is best. But remember not to contaminate the plunger stem before aspirating the blood into the syringe. #vascularaccess #medschool #doctor #medstudent #residency #nursingstudent #newgradnurse #phlebotomy #icunurse #ernurse #criticalcare #chronicillness #ehlersdanlos #eds #mcas #nursingschool #ernurse #resuscitation #ultrasoundguidedpiv #usgpiv (Disclosures: I have a consulting agreement with the following companies Nexus Medical, Eloquest, Covalon, Access Vascular)
