Serpent Mound is an ancient wonder of the world that is over 1,000 years old and the largest effigy (animal-shaped) mound on earth. You’d *never* guess it’s located in: OHIO. Built on the site of an asteroid impact crater by ancestors of the Shawnee and Miami tribes, it’s a giant design of a serpent eating an egg. It also functions as a cosmic calendar that aligns perfectly with the setting sun on the summer solstice. 𓆙 Here’s where you can find it, plus a few extra tips on how to experience it: • An hour’s drive from Cincinnati. • Parking and admission are $8. • If you can, absolutely visit on a day when you can go on a 1.5 hr tour (offered only twice a month, call or see tour schedule at www.ohiohistory.org). • During the week of summer solstice (June 20th this year) when you can see the sunset align with the serpent’s head, Native American tribal members are usually present to give talks and share the indigenous story of the mound. • The observation tower is currently closed for repair through 2024. While there are plenty of maps and aerial images of what the mound looks like from above, taking it in at ground level alone is still worth it. • Drones and climbing on the mound are not allowed. It’s a sacred site, so please treat it with respect.
