As you probably know, October is breast cancer awareness month & I decided to share my story with you all in hopes it may help someone. On 7/25, I found out I had cancer. Today is surgery day (10/20) & I’m having a double mastectomy. I had no symptoms. I felt no lump. Genetic testing was negative. I have only 1 risk factor (breast density) I check all the boxes of protective factors, such as breastfeeding for a long duration (8 yrs!) I had my mammograms scheduled exactly a year apart. In June last year it was clear. In June this year the cancer was grade 3 (fastest growing) & had spread so far that a lumpectomy was not an option for me. If I would have procrastinated, my prognosis would have been worse. If you or a loved one have been putting off your screening, don’t wait too much longer! 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. I’ll never feel or look the same again, & there’s still much more to come in terms of appointments and surgeries, but I’m very happy with my team of doctors at University of Chicago & am hoping for the best outcome. #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness💕 #breastcancerawarenessmonth #doublemasectomy
