I dry to never let my batts get to caked in clay, nor do I let them dry out. It’s easiest to remove at this point, just after the wheel thrown pots have been taken off them. The process tickles my brain, although I shouldn’t admit to how many times I’ve cut my thumb with the sharp edge of this scraper. Once the batts are clean, I use what’s been removed to pick up all the tiny specks of clay that inevitably remain on the table and then the whole lot is thrown into the reclaim bucket, where it’ll quickly dissolve into a fine slurry, ready to be recycled properly. #clay #satisfying #oddlysatisfying #stoneware

I forgot how messy this stuff is… Coarse red stoneware, the same clay I used to mix a lot of during my apprenticeship with Lisa Hammond, for her pots. It’s a rough, toothy clay, and throwing it isn’t the most pleasant experience, it feels as if the grog is sharper than other bodies I’ve used, but once the walls have been saturated somewhat, and drawn up to be relatively thin, it throws like normal. It should, with any luck, fire to a dark crimson tone and this bowl is made from only this red stoneware, whereas the pots you’ll see later in this video, at the end, have been mixed down with a smoother body, making them much easier to throw, that’s the subject of my upcoming YouTube video in fact. You might have noticed more clays popping up in my feed this year. It’s something I’ve wanted to do now for a while, expand the range of clays I use, whilst sticking with the same handful of glazes, this way it’s the stoneware that changes the colours of my glazes, not the glazes themselves. Trimming a grogged, stoneware bowl is the subject of this week’s narrated YouTube video, which you may have seen me throw in my previous upload from last Sunday. The shape is refined, any undulations in the rim corrected and excess clay removed but, this isn’t the only form I’m finishing in this film, as it’s concluded with a trimming montage of sorts that shows numerous other stoneware bowls being finished. In an ideal world I would have made clay test tiles before committing to producing larger shapes, but I don’t have time and I have faith that these should work, as they all fire to roughly the same temperature range. A few are heavily grogged; some are smooth as butter and others have an almost green-tone to them. I’ll be bisque firing these and glazing them as soon as possible and I can’t wait to make another film that shows that process, clay and glaze tests are always the most exciting things to exit fired kilns, even more so than the pots themselves, as I know what they’ll look like once fired. Considering how coarse this red stoneware is, it trims beautifully. The clay tears in a spiralling fashion, especially in the centre of the foot-well and the gritty texture makes for a very tactile vessel, to a degree where I’m considering to leave this bowl unglazed. It’ll be fired to cone ten, so the body will vitrify, the particles of clay, the platelets, fusing so much that water can no longer enter the body. I ditch my tungsten tools for gritty clay like this, does anyone else do that? I’ve had some opposing comments on YouTube about it. I’ve always been advised not to use tungsten carbide trimmers with very coarse clays, I even have one tool that has a tiny chip out of the blade, but I can’t be sure whether that occurred when trimming, or when I placed the tool back in the box and the metal collided with another tungsten blade. Either way, since then, trimming coarse clay means using the cheaper, steel tools, which I can achieve the same finish with, it just takes longer. I say this a lot, but purchasing expensive trimming tools won’t make you a better turner. I think it has more to do with your practical ability and skill, as a competent trimmer can use relatively blunt tools and achieve the same level of finish, it’s about how you use them. The main thing that’s affected is the time it takes to trim, as these steel tools carve through the clay slowly and impart more pressure on the vessel itself, meaning you could distort the shape of the pot if you’re pressing in too firmly. Yet, at the same time, tungsten tools come with similar difficulties. They tend to catch more, chatter, if you make a mistake and gouge too harshly the pot will be decimated and if you drop the trimmer on the floor, well, there’s a chance it’ll shatter. Some very inefficient packing — I wouldn’t wrap like this during my regular shop updates, but there are times when a prettier parcel is needed, if you can call these pretty. I’ve switched to using all paper materials, for the most part anyway, I still have a box full of plastic fragile tape that might take me two or three years to use up. There are relatively good alternatives these days, especially for paper bubble wrap, although how it’s manufactured causes the stuff to stink, so apologies for that, when you open up a box of mine. I always sometime use ‘hivewrap’ from time to time, which is the paper mesh-like material with tissue paper. Again, it works well and has its uses but I prefer mixing a few different materials up when protecting pots for longer distance journeys. I collect waste cardboard throughout the year and cut it into lengths the same size as the boxes I use. I line the single, but usually double walled cardboard boxes with these to make them as strong as possible, so they’re less likely to crumple during transit, when they’re inevitably kicked. Surprisingly, thick recycled brown paper, which I buy in large, pre-cut rectangles, seem to do a wonderful job at padding out the pots before they’re wrapped in the previously mentioned materials. It’s cheap and almost does the same job as the foam I used to use, although nothing protects edges like that stuff did… #postage #pottery #ceramics #stoneware #handmade

This week’s YouTube video shows the first steps of a new clay and glaze test with metal, bronze, inclusions. It’s a follow-up from my last round of experiments where I discuss a potential idea that produces a more subtle result. In my previous round of tests, the bronze filings ended up dominating the pale green crackle glaze, making it appear somewhat ill-ridden, specked in blots of blood red. The idea is to use this new coarse red stoneware clay, (PF 690), with a crimson clay and with the metal wedged into the body. The copper red flashes produced by the bronze are practically the same colour as the glaze, so they should appear scattered quietly across the surface and with the addition of the red clay, that fires to crimson-brown, they should make for some rather new and interesting vessels. Yet, it’ll be a while until these pots are fired, as I’ve just concluded a reduction firing cycle, so consider this a little tease, a film to get the ball rolling.
