This is a direct result of human selective breeding for wool that is harvested for commercial purposes and speaks to how we have altered their lives. The wild mouflon of Europe and Asia, from whom they are descended, was a coarse-haired animal with a downy undercoat. This body covering responded to the seasons, growing dense and providing protection in the cooler months, only to then be shed in the summer months. Meet Raha! We’ve been waiting for the right moment to introduce you to this precious orphaned black rhino, whose name means joy in Swahili. She came to us in September 2022, after Ol Pejeta Conservancy scouts discovered her all alone. She had extensive injuries to her nether regions; these are believed to be the result of jackals, who’d attacked her when she was all alone and unable to defend herself. Our priority since then has been to help her heal and to support her well-being. At last, we feel she's out of the most precarious stage of her recovery and we can't wait for you to fall in love with her, as have our Keepers & all of us! We will share about Raha’s rescue and recovery in the days to come, but for now, we thought you might enjoy witnessing her daily evening trot back to her stable!
