Horton was found unresponsive and abandoned in a home during the coldest part of our winter. He arrived at our shelter on January 19th when the high was expected to reach only 12 degrees after he was rescued by our Animal Service Officers. He was found with another dog who unfortunately did not make it. After being rushed to our shelter, our vet clinic team jumped into action to save Horton's precious life. Hair dryers, blankets, and even slippers were placed on Horton to help bring his body temperature back to a normal level. Little by little we started to see signs of life. From slightly blinking his eyes, to making eye contact with one of our vets as she spoke words of encouragement to him…he was showing us that he was ready and willing to fight. Before we knew it, Horton eagerly ate wet food that we provided to him showing that he was fully conscious even though he was still very weak. A vet tech carefully carried him to the floor where he could be closely monitored for the rest of the day. Just a few days later…Horton is showing his sweet personality and enjoying the affection and care that our vet clinic is giving him. Horton is on his way to a full recovery and we will fight for him just as he fought for his own life. Julep has been adopted. Julep came in through Animal Services and the officer thought that she had mobility issues. That was not the case the vet clinic checked her over and determined that she was healthy and ready for adoption after her stray hold was over. Owner surrenders are hard on both the family and the pet. That's why our pet support team works with pet owners to help them keep their beloved pets. However, in some cases, the owners have already exhausted every avenue and surrendering is their only option. The letter expresses the love they have for Dunkin and the heartache they feel to leave him. They explained how he has a sensitive tummy and gave advice on what food works best for him. They wrote about his love of toys and that the squeaky ones are his favorite, even though he likes to de-stuff them as quickly as possible. We learned that he spent his nights cuddled up in bed with them and used them as his own personal pillow. They even explain why they believe that he should be the only pet in the home. On February 28th the Kansas City Fire Department were called to a fire where they found Benny badly burned. An Animal Services Officer was called to bring Benny to KC Pet Project where they started life saving treatment. Benny sustained burns to his nose, ears, and back. After working to control his body temperature, cleaning his wounds, and placing medicated patches we are happy to say the Benny is now in a stable condition. Benny has a long road ahead of him but we are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.
