Why are we watching women take over the world in business, politics, sports, and entertainment but when it comes to pregnancy, we are supportive of a fragile and fearful narrative? Every woman’s pregnancy is going to be different but we all should be given the tools to make decisions that support our PERSONAL circumstances and needs. I found doctors that knew my training history and current fitness level and they were extremely supportive of me continuing my workout regimen throughout my pregnancy (and getting back to it postpartum), obviously listening to my body and regressing as I needed. I did have to slow down and change things up but I still strength trained (“heavy”), hiked at altitude, and did steady state cardio (mainly spinning) almost every day of my pregnancy. There are so many generalized protocols in our healthcare system that may apply to some mothers!! but may NOT to others. Here are some of the common ones that I challenge you to not only ask your OB but ask your own body: Don’t get heart rate over 140 bpm Don’t lift anything over 15 lbs Don’t use the vasalva maneuver (similar mechanics of breathing thru a lift, held inhale and forced exhale) No jumping or bouncing movements No “exercise” at least 6 weeks postpartum I’m so glad I listened to my own body, not only did I have the labor and delivery of my dreams but I walked out of the delivery room and felt amazing shortly postpartum. This was MY experience, I share this NOT as a standard for comparison but simply to advocate for doctors to update their fitness education so they can prescribe more movement and activities safe for women at all fitness levels. Exercise is not only good for our physical, mental, and emotional health while pregnant but baby’s, as well! (Please understand that training during pregnancy will look different for every woman.) It’s time that we own pregnancy and stop fearing it! We are made for this and being strong is a crucial component to get over any fears. Staying active, if you can, is key ♥️ #postpartum #trainingduringpregnancy #kettlebellworkout #kbworkouts #womenwholift #pregnancy #trainingpostpartum #whoruntheworld
