Our new kelp exhibit opening this month has me thinking about all the other seaweeds that call the Salish Sea home. We have a wide variety of red, green, and brown seaweeds. #salishsea #seaweed #kelp #algae #lowtide #intertidal #visitgigharborwa #gigharbor #foxisland
Sometimes you have to wait on nature. This species of nudibranch is easy to spot on docks, especially in summer when there is plentiful plankton in the water for them to feed on. Don’t try and sniff them while they are underwater, but if you come across one out of the water, take a whiff and youll drfinitely notice the artificial watermelon bubble gum smell they emit. #nudibranch #hoodednudibranch #salishsea #dockfouling #jerisichdock #gigharbor #visitgigharborwa #visitgigharbor #seagull
There were 5 different jellyfish species visible from the dock today in Gig Harbor Wa. #jellyfish #jerisichdock #gigharbor #salishsea #pugetsound #eggyolkjellyfish
Thanks to Kate from Fox Island for sharing about this washed up Giant Pacific Octopus. Male GPOs often wash up like this after mating. Females will tend the eggs intil they hatch and then they too perish. #gpo #octopus #salishsea #wa #visitgigharborwa #foxisland #gigharbor #beach #giantpacificoctopus
Have you ever seen one? These can be hard to spot, unless you know where to look. #moonsnail #salishsea #visitgigharborwa #gigharbor #pugetaound #wildlife #snail #snailtok
Replying to @PuzzledDessy this is why I should bring a tripod to the beach so I can get better timelapse footage. #sanddollar #purdyspit #gigharbor #echinoderm #lowtide #salishsea #visitgigharborwa #marinebiology #intertidal
Replying to @E Griff 🤷🏻♀️ if these were really worth a dollar, we wouldn’t have to fundraise or wrote grants again! #nonprofit #lowtide #sanddollar #purdyspit #gigharbor #visitgigharborwa
Pacific Red Octopus, Octopus rubescens is our most commonly encountered octo here in the Salish Sea. You shouslnt handle them thiugh, because they have a venomous beak in the center of all their tentacles. That venom helps them to immobilize small crabs that it preys upon before the crabs pinchers can do damage to the octopus. #octopus #redoctopus #salishsea #portofseattle #gigharbor #wa #pnw #wildlife #fieldtrip #penmetparks
Under water in Gig Harbor! The swift currents near the mouth of Gig Harbor foster rich kelp and seaweed growth as soon as the days start lengthening (like now!) Tjis provides vital habitat for many different species of invertebrates and fish. The whole thing relies on clean water, so be sure if you’re a boater to take advantage of Pierce County’s FREE mobile pumpout services to keep sewage out of the Puget Sound. #salishsea #visitgigharborwa #gigharbor #pugetsound #mobilepumpout #wa #pnw #intertidal #seaweed #kelp #bullkelp
My job is indeed weird sometimes. Many thanks to my husband, Peter the biology stident who happened to walk by, and the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife officer and her daughter for the quick response. Hopefully we can learn a lot about this harbor seal. #seal #marinemammal #marinebiologist #dramaticreenactment #visitgigharborwa #harborseal #gigharbor #purdyspit

Nature is going to nature! The mottled sea stars, Evasterias troschelii, spawned in our touch tank. Pancake the octopus is just one of the exciting new changes to our Marine Life Center! He’s still settling in to his new 300 gallon system but is eating well and exploring (and often rearranging) his habitat. Come check him out during our new expanded hours from 11-6pm Wed-Sun. In addition to our octopus, we have touch tanks, scavenger hunts, interpretive signage and an immersive bull kelp exhibit designed by the Port Townsend Marine Life Center. We are even giving away some tasty kelp chips from our friends at @12tides while supplies last! Shore crabs can be observed at the beach even when there isn’t a negative tide. Check for them near the top of the beach, usually under rocks. LIFT rocks and observe what is underneath and then replace the rock exactly as you found it. Never roll rocks over as you can crush delicate animals when the rock is placed back. Leaving a rock rolled the wrong way leaves encrusting organisms stranded where they won’t survive so always leave the beach as you found it. Even better, take a few pieces of trash with you. #salishsea #crab #shorecrab #pugetsound #intertidal #lowtide #tidepool #visitgigharborwa #gigharbor #crabtok #marinebiology
