Our trip started with two applications on recreation.gov, each for two hikers at “Half Dome” , a 16.5 mile hike ending with a hand-over-hand cable ascent up to the summit. We each submitted our applications with mere seconds before our plane left the tarmac at EWR. By the time we landed at SFO, one of our applications had beaten the 91% failure rate, which we got the highly anticipated gmail notification for just as we turned our phones off of airplane mode! HALF DOME!! Have you done this hike?! It’s an incredibly challenging and iconic hike in Yosemite National Park and it has been on my bucket list for years. It is a hike that requires a permit (you need to apply for a permit lottery early in the year). I felt so scared on the cables but when I reached the top of Half Dome, I burst into tears. The worst wasn’t over though… the descent down back to the parking lot was so painful. It’s steep and really rough on the joints after a full day of hiking.
