Garden Zones 8-11 - Time to sow seeds for things in the allium family like onions, leeks, and shallots. It takes a while for these to grow to transplant size. My goal is to transplant them in early October. Start seeds now! I like to sprinkle seeds in 4 inch pots of in a 10x20 tray to grow them out. Once they are around 6 inches tall, I start separating each little plant. You can grow hundreds of onions from just a packet of seeds. Right now, the climate outside is very hostile to young tender seedlings. If your located in the southern united states zones 8 and up, you know what I mean. Its way too hot and the disease/pest pressure is insane. To get the healthiest seedlings possible, I recommend to start seeds in doors. How and when to fertilize seedlings. - Start fertilizing when the first set of true leaves grow in. - Use a liquid fertilizer like Grow Big, Super Thrive, or Miracle Grow and mix at half strength of whatever the directions say.
