After escaping narcissistic abuse, I was an empty shell of a human. I didn’t know who I was, what I liked or where to turn, & it took everything in me to simply exist on autopilot. As my therapist said, I was “unhinged.” Unlike single-event traumas, such as natural disasters or accidents, complex trauma is insidious in its nature, weaving its way into the fabric of daily existence, leaving deep imprints on the psyche and soul, so the healing process can be deeply intense. Find a Trauma-Informed Therapist who specializes in CBT & EMDR to help access & process the trauma effectively. 2. Practice grounding techniques such as deep breathing to stay present & avoid dissociating when stressed. 3. Validate your feelings, nurture your emotions, show yourself kindness & practice self-compassion. 4. Learn to set boundaries, minimize triggers & create a sense of safety in your environment. 5. Incorporate mindfulness & meditation into your daily routine to establish self awareness, regulate your nervous system & minimize reactive emotions. Remember that healing is a gradual & nonlinear process, so it won’t look the same for any 2 people. Be patient with yourself as you navigate the healing, & know that if you can live through the pain of abuse, you can live through the growing pains of healing, too.
