Here is my process for spring chicks (garage temp being 35-55 degrees F… 1. Chicks in the house with a brooder plate 2-3 weeks 2. Chicks in the garage with a brooder plate for 2 weeks 3. Chicks in the garage with out a brooder plate 1 week 4. Chicks to the coop with no heat! Integration part 1… 1. Move chicks to be with the flock but protected. If you have a run that’s a great place to put them during the day. At night move them to the inside of the coop or back in your garage etc. I’ve used this set up, dog crates, temp coops, cheap mobile runs etc 2. Chicks need to be protected so the bigs can check them out but not hurt them. I do this for 1-2 weeks. 3. I’ll let them mingle with the bigs while the bigs are out free ranging and distracted. Or leave their crate propped open big enough for them to get in and out but not the older ones. They sit on the nest, act crazy or just lay on the ground when you take them off the nest, and just want to sit on eggs so they hatch. First time broody hens don’t always make great moms. But, sometimes they do! If a hen is broody, I will usually give her a couple weeks on the nest before giving her chicks. Hens don’t always take to the chicks. Pick a day when you’ll be available to intervene if it goes bad. Give them space but peak in the door now and then. Let her sit on them overnight and even the next day with out disturbing them. It works best with chicks who are brand new. Another downfall…these hen raised chicks aren’t going to be your best friend.
