The State of the U.S. Jobs Market. Non-Farm Payroll vs. Household Survey Regardless which jobs data you look at, both are softening. But the Household Survey began weakening much earlier than the Non-Farm Payroll. The Household Survey last month went into contractionary phase- with NEGATIVE JOBS GROWTH. And if you back out the jobs added by the government themselves, it’s MEANINGFULLY NEGATIVE. Might not shock you, but the government doesn’t speak much about that data series- EVEN THOUGH the response rate from respondents is almost 2x higher than the Non-Farm Payrolls. There’s no perfect way to collect data- but info like this gives rise to the populus opinion that the jobs market isn’t as strong as what the government is telling us. Friday’s number will be important- it WILL MOVE MARKETS. Apple Stock has been the DARLING investment over the past couple decades… But there’s an old saying, ‘Trees don’t grow to the sun’- and apples growth has stalled… And in fact, overall sales/revenue growth have gone negative… Has Apple’s stock gone down?! NOPE. 75% higher since sales growth went negative. WHY?! It’s hard to explain outside of passive/index investing. What to expect out of the S&P 500 in 2025. 25% years don’t come back to back very often- as investors we should all celebrate that this year over the holidays! In fact, it’s only happened 3 times in history. The experience after each of the prior 3 experiences, is a bit of a crapshoot. 1x killer returns (1999) 1x modestly positive returns (1956) 1x brutally negative returns (1937) Broad takeaway when looking at the 5 year period following the blockbuster returns, it’s not great.
