info
~30% of farm worker families live below the poverty line, which are 60% π²π½-born. This is 2x the poverty rate of the U.S. as a whole. Remember, the U.S. minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009, and doesnβt even apply in some circumstances, like at small farms. There are 2-3 million farm workers workers in the U.S. each year & their average annual income is $34,790 despite being the backbone of society & the agricultural and food industry contributing ~$1.5 trillion GDP. Farm workers were, and remain, excluded from the federal protections of the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, which forbids employers from firing a worker for joining, organizing, or supporting a labor union. The federal Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 explictly excluded agricultural workers from overtime pay, as well. Only a few states have enacted any laws protecting the unionization & overtime pay rights of agricultural workers, like my State of Washington. #farmworkers #union #agriculture #mexican #latina #agricultural #awareness #education #educate #mexico #farmworkersfeedyou #food #foodindustry #us #immigrant #unionstrong #farm #farmlife #awarenessmatters #learnsomethingnew
