info
Far too many sharks and marine life are entangled in marine debris and the average number of entangled marine animals around the world seems to be increasing… #Bycatch is a leading cause of marine life deaths in general with around 9-12 species being caught per 1 target species in the commercial fishing industry. These entangled sharks and marine animals are killed “accidentally” every single day!! If the sharks or other species are not killed, they usually suffer trauma, stress and high cortisol levels, broken jaws, or hooks and lines that can cause irritation and scarring that disrupts their countershading and hunting abilities. We see so many sharks with lines at our dive site here in Hawai’i every day; even with the protection from legislation making it illegal to catch a shark. We try our best to always cut lines short if we see them and remove anything we can from these amazing and resilient apex predators. 💙 Please consider limiting your seafood consumption, vote for environmental legislation, stop your single use plastic use, and be a voice and advocate for sharks! If you wish to do more to help sharks, come on a dive with @OneOceanDiving to learn more Disclaimer: these are professional shark safety divers and marine biologists so please do not attempt. Lots of rapid behavior analysis, game plan, adaptation, & teaming up for safety, go into trying to save a shark from fishing line. 🧜🏽♀️ @oceanramsey 🧜♂️ @juansharks 🛥️ @oneoceandiving #savesharks #helpsavesharks #helpus #plasticpollution #bycatch #sharkfishing #sharkid_alyssa
