Here’s some images of the incredible tradition of seaweed thatching on Læsø Island! 🇩🇰 Since the 17th century, this picturesque Danish island has had houses topped with thick bundles of silvery seaweed - a roofing technique born out of necessity and honed through generations of craftsmanship! But what exactly makes seaweed such a good roofing material? 🤔 💭 • It’s not just about tradition - it’s about sustainability and resilience!♻️ • Eelgrass is a type of seagrass found abundantly around the island. Not only is it naturally resistant to fire, rot, and pests, but it also absorbs CO2 and is carbon neutral when harvested locally AND let’s not forget its durability. • A seaweed roof can last for centuries, with some of Læsø’s remaining roofs dating back over 300 years! 🏡💚 So, would you stay in one?
