What makes an ancestor? This has always been such an interesting subject, so we hope you learnt something new! All information is taken from the wonderful Encyclopaedia of African Religion - one of our favourite books🫶🏾 Here are some general categories of ancestors: Family Ancestors: These are the direct relatives of a person or family lineage, including parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who have passed away. Their memory is preserved through oral histories, rituals, and in some cultures, small altars or shrines in the home. Royal Ancestors: Kings, queens, and other noble figures who once led communities or entire kingdoms. For instance, the #ashanti people of Ghana often honour past, invoking their wisdom and leadership qualities. Heroic Ancestors: Individuals known for their extraordinary deeds, bravery, or significant contributions to society. A notable example would be #shakazulu , revered for his military strategies and leadership in uniting the Zulu nation in South Africa. #africanmythology #storytelling #ancestors #folklore
