I FINALLY made it over to the Mithraeum! I’ve been trying to get here for a few years but just never had enough time on layovers. This is such a fantastic space and a fantasic way to allow visitors to learn & engage with an archaeological site. Someone had asked about ancient fabric and wouldn’t you know it, they had some on display for the current Roman Legion exhibit at the British Museum! The sock is quite famous and the leather shoes are one of the most common finds at Vindolanda thanks to the incredible anaerobic mud there. #archaeologytiktok #archaeology #ancienthistory #romanempire #fabric

That’s right! Actual coins from the reign of Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra VII! The first of several highlights from the current Roman Legion exhibit at the British Museum! Even if you’re not a military history person, there’s so much here to enjoy and it’s presented in a fun, informative and thoughtful way. They have some excellent pieces on loan from other museums to tell a really comprehensive story about the reality of life in the Roman army. Bonus points if you spot @Tash the Archaeologist! 😁
