All series production power steering systems maintain a mechanical connection between the vehicle's front wheels and the steering wheel. If the assistance system, be it electric or hydraulic, were to fail, the mechanical link still works as a backup. Further, current regulations require this mechanical connection to be in place. However, the rigid mechanical connection is a major drawback as far as the systems functional features are concerned. Issues such as noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and crashworthiness are also drawbacks of the rigid system. Advances in mechatronic systems mean that the rigid link may be replaced - with wires. Steer-by-wire vehicles transfer the rotation of the steering wheel to front wheel movement by using sensors and use an electronically controlled actuator in place of the conventional steering rack. Feedback, an important characteristic of a steering system, is generated for the driver by a force feedback actuator behind the steering wheel.
