‼️TRIGGERING‼️A 2022 study of six American medical schools found that off the 84% of medical students that had performed pelvic exams under anesthesia (EUA), 67% stated that they never or rarely witnessed explicit consent being obtained for a student to perform the pelvic exam under anesthesia. The study concluded that “while students regularly perform pelvic EUAs, their involvement is inconsistently disclosed to patients, causing significant distress to students and risking erosion of students’ attitudes about upholding patient autonomy and informed consent. Medical institutions must develop consistent, ethical, and patient-centered processes for trainee disclosure around pelvic EUAs.” Why getting consent for this type of educational training isn’t mandated across the country is beyond me. Every state doesn’t have a law addressing this but it doesn’t mean that teaching facilities aren’t getting consent. It really is the ethical and right thing to do. Especially given the shady and horrific history of performing procedures on Black folk without their knowledge, this post had me in my feelings. Plus, she mentioned tonsils so you know I sat straight up👀I had to share it with you so that you will be informed about your rights, especially when you enter a teaching facility. And this has nothing to do with your race now. Period. Read the fine print on those consents, please, including the ones when you’re admitted🙏🏾 Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35672245/ Tell me your thoughts in the comments.
