Native plants thrive in urban settings even when most people refuse to plant native lawns. Cities and suburbs in California could be biodiverse native plant oasis’s that have yearly superblooms and benefit both humans and wildlife. I stopped next to the freeway in downtown sacramento because I saw a beautiful native plant lawn surrounded by invasive landscapes. Instead of a monoculture this lawn is pure biodiversity. We have California poppies blooming everywhere and lupine a native nitrogen fixing plant that helps heal bad soil. It’s amazing seeing a wildflower superbloom lawn of native plants starting to claim there land back. This is how you save the environment while ending the extinction crisis. Planting non native and invasive plants just because humans can eat them is not restoration. Many of the plants we eat are native to Europe and give very little benefit to native wildlife. The point of guerrilla gardening is to plant native plants that benefit ecology and help make cities and suburbs less of a biodiversity wasteland. Or help save a native plant from extinction like the endangered California hibiscus. Today we are going to try and stop the extinction of one of my favorite native flowers. We are guerrilla gardening the endangered California hibiscus, a beautiful wildflower that used to be common before colonization. And we are removing invasive plants like water hyacinths that are destroying native habitats. But if we don't save the delta from the delta tunnels, chinook salmon and the California hibiscus are doomed. Saving an endangered species is easy when people actually try. Water is life. Why do companies love posting viral videos of their workers planting thousands of trees where a intact biodiverse forest used to be. The answer is simple. Greed. Almost all of the old growth redwood forest has been logged already , only 4% remains. The story is similar for every old growth tree in North America. Protecting mature and old growth forests should be a number priority globally these trees are massive carbon batteries that protect us from the effects of climate change. And are crucial for wildlife biodiversity. California and Canada are covered in unhealthy second growth monoculture lumber forests that are logged every 50 years. These forests make wildfires worse and have 80% less wildlife then old growth. Stop letting companies trick you into letting them destroy the little old growth left , so they can plant another forest factory farm. Cities and suburbs in California constantly landscape with invasive trees that smell like stank and monoculture grass lawns. Bradford pears are a horticultural atrocity used all over America where native biodiversity once was. Especially tacky hank hill suburbs. This trees are invasive and do nothing beneficial for native wildlife. You could be growing beautiful native plants like ceanothus. A nitrogen fixing plant that is extremely drought. When it’s in bloom the entire shrub looks blue , and is covered with native bees. I’m sick of smelling stinky trees every spring when we could be having yearly superblooms that look and smell good.
