BUT what if he cant? does that change his worth? does that mean YOU are justified in writing him off? assumptions, whether good or bad, aren’t doing anyone a favor. I love the message that has gone out from @coordown and @madisontevlin ; it’s brilliant and empowering at its core 💪🏻 it’s important for people to hear and believe. it’s crucial that we leave behind the outdated ideas that individuals with Down syndrome CAN’T simply by glancing at them. we can’t predict a person’s abilities from a diagnosis. every single person is so uniquely designed, so even though one person with Down syndrome CAN do ___, doesn’t mean everyone with the same diagnosis holds that same ability or interest. it’s important we don’t assume one way or another across the board, because we will either 1. be unintentionally insulting in our response to someone’s unexpected ability or 2. be disappointed by someone’s unexpected imability. in either of these assumptions, or somewhere in the middle, it doesn’t change the one inherent truth that each individual person with down syndrome holds immense power and worth, simply because they are human and they are here.
