Doune Castle is a Hollywood A-Lister! It has starred as Winterfell in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones, Castle Leoch in Outlander as well as in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Outlaw King to name but a few. Originally built in the 13th century, Doune Castle was most likely damaged during the Scottish Wars of Independence and rebuilt in its present form in the late 14th century. The man who rebuilt it was Robert Stewart, known as the Duke of Albany and grandson of Robert the Bruce. Albany has often been referred to as the ‘uncrowned king of Scotland’, and was the country’s effective ruler from 1388 to his death in 1420.
