Dr. Ruth Gottesman was was left with over $1 billion when her husband passed, and he instructed her, “Do whatever you think is right with it.” The billionaire chose to use the money to eliminate tuition in perpetuity at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. Dr. Gottesman has been associated with the medical school for over 55 years, and has seen the challenges students face when they graduate with over $200k in debt, which, historically, over 50% of Albert Einstein’s students have. Her $1 billion donation will be put into an endowment from which the income will be used to pay students’ tuition. Dr. Gottesman nearly donated without her name attached to the gift at all, but a friend and colleague encouraged her to use her name.
