We almost went extinct. 930,000 years ago something happened that brought our ancestors to the brink of extinction. For over 100,000 years only 1,300 of them managed to survive, before ultimately expanding again about 830,000 years ago. We have no idea what caused this incredibly close call, but the findings from this genetic study also line up with the relative abscence of human ancestors in the fossil record during this period. What do you think could have caused this brush with extinction? Candidates include climate change and subsequent resource scarcity and disease, but there is no solid proof either way. I just keep going back to the visual of 1,300 people. Its so few. If you live in a city you likely pass by more people than that everyday.
