“The Colors That Make Us” Acrylic on Cardboard, 2024 Here it is! The cardboard box that took me the longest to make. I think like 2-3 weeks to make. Not only did I have to weave a box head together (something I won’t attempt again for a minute lol) but I also had to make sure EVERY SQUARE on the box head was a different color. Every. Single. Square. Is a different color. Even if there are similar colors, they are mixed up just enough to be uniquely different. How many colors does that make? 268 different colors… That’s not even counting the tie, shirt, and pocket square (those three I actually kind of cheated with and repeated some of the same colors that I used on the head, but still mixed up a bit…) I’m exhausted XD It came out really well though. I love the head, the shirt, and the tie (which can even flip to make it black and white! Special thanks to my friend Liz for helping me out with that feature!) “See Me (After Philip Mason)” Mixed Media on Cardboard, 2022 (repost) I made this a couple of years back for black history month. I saw this beautiful photograph taken back in the 1960’s by photographer Philip Mason of a woman with an amazing square Afro. I just knew I had to make an art piece off of that. I always want my art to be as relatable as I can make it, but obviously there are some experiences that I don’t share with some of my colleagues. I still want to show my support for everyone in the most respectful ways that I can and show off the beauty that I see in everyone. I’ve been a little sick these past few days (blame the Covid booster shot as well as a flu shot on the same day… so yea I’m feeling GREAT.) So I figured I’d share some older WIP pics, including this one that I’ve been working on since… sheesh either 2020 or 2021. I haven’t been working on it off and on, I started it years ago and just got overwhelmed by the detail that was going into it (it’s also taller than I am, it’s a BIG painting), so I just kinda stopped. Which is a shame because I LOVE how this looks. I’d argue it’s the best detail I ever got with oil paints. I’m definitely gonna come back to it this year.
