Before computers, mobile phones and social networks people gathered to socialize at the local department store, school sports games, community parks, shopping malls, sat on front porches and other venues. So last weekend, I had the joy of chatting with local seniors that recall going to Tiedtke's Department - A Toledo Ohio Treasure (1894-1973) with a rich history in the community ... watch the video documentary here. Tiedtke's wasn't just a department store; it was a community social hub, a destination, and a source of local pride throughout Toledo Ohio for almost 80 years. Founded in 1894 as a grocery store, it quickly expanded, eventually occupying a grand building at the corner of Summit and Adams Streets. Here's a glimpse into its captivating atmosphere ... Imagine a bustling, multi-story emporium with white-washed storefront windows adorned with eye-catching advertisements, reminiscent of a carnival sideshow. Stepping inside, you'd be greeted by the aroma of freshly ground coffee, baked goods, and popcorn – a sensory experience as much as a shopping trip. Tiedtke's was a one-stop shop for everything imaginable. The first floor housed a vast grocery section with fresh produce, meat, fish, and pantry staples. As you ascended, you'd find housewares, toys, clothing, shoes, and even a 2-ton cheese wheel displayed proudly during Christmas! They were known for their high-quality merchandise and personalized customer service. Tiedtke's was an experience. Imagine enjoying live organ music while you shopped, or marveling at towering stacks of candy. Kids would delight in the toy department, while parents browsed fashion and homeware. The festive atmosphere, especially during holidays, made it a cherished tradition for generations of Toledoans. #Toledo #Ohio #departmentstore #history #culture #community #social #network #people #family #tiedtkes
