info
#Ascomycete cup fungi are lined with millions of microscopic needle-shaped sacs (called asci) full of spores. They are pressure sensitive, so when they get hit with a gust of wind (or in this case me blowing on them), the spore sacs rupture, squirting a cloud of spores into the air to be carried on air currents. If you listen carefully, you can hear an audible “hiss” right when the spores are being released. What a cool method for spore dispersal! . Safety-wise it’s not particularly hazardous to blow on these cups and release the spores, just don’t intentionally inhale them. This works with pretty much any cup fungi, so try out this trick to impress your friends! . . . #learnontiktok #peziza #cupfungi #ascomycota #fascinatedbyfungi #mycology #spores #spore #ascus
