A full length demonstrstion (trimmed and sped up at times) of axe carving a spoon blank from a section of maple wood. This video takes you through how I thin the wood with a carving axe, apply the crank (the bent part of a spoon), draw the template, and carve the blank to an appropriate size which will make it easier to carve by hand with my carving tools later. Less material = easier to carve. And maple is hard so this is key. I use two different hatchets, one is rather blunt, and the second is sharp and has a crisp edge, which I use a @Tormek to hone the edge of. I also use a @SilkyEurope saw to apply the stop cuts. The hand drawn template is rather ugly which is not ideal but I am out of pracrise. The rough template is fine though because I just need a rough shape and can adjust as I carve by hand later. The spoon shown at the beginning and end is what I carved using this blank later on. After that it will need further refinement and then some finishing touches such as kolrosing decorations, burnishing, and some tung oil. Happy carving. πΏπ #spooncarving #axecarving #woodcarving #woodworking #handmade #handcraft
