info
–Antacids, H2 Blockers, and PPIs– 🫧Antacids -These drugs neutralize existing stomach acid -They work quickly but do not last long! -Immediate relief is felt by the patient, but again, this will not last long! ❌H2 Blockers -Secretion receptors in the stomach are BLOCKED -These work quickly & can last up to 12 hours in patients to provide relief of acid reflux -These are a desired choice among many patients since they work quickly and last longer than antacids! 💊Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) -PPIs inhibit, or block, production of acid in the stomach entirely -Examples include pantoprazole (Protonix) or omeprazole (Prilosec) -These work slowly and take time to build, but provide the most ideal long-term relief -Not effective for rapid onset Why might a patient be STARTED on a PPI while admitted to the hospital?
