Mary Queen of Scots first husband, Francis II, died on on the 5th December 1560 when he was 16 years old. One month shy of his 17th birthday. His body was taken and buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. The Basillica had been the burial place of the Kings of France since the 10th century. Francis’ heart was placed in bronze urn atop an intricately carved column at the Eglise des Celestins. During the French Revolution the Basilica was raided and the remains of many tombs were desecrated, bodies were removed and effigies destroyed. Francis’ body was never found after this point. The column which Francis’ heart was on was saved by archeologist Alexandre Lenoir and placed in the museum of French monuments until it was moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1817. #reign #maryqueenotscots #marystuart #frenchrevolution #reigntok #historytime #historytiktok #historybuff #historylesson #historytok #history #maryqueenofscotland
