In 2019, BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis interviewed the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, where he spoke about his relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and addressed allegations about sex with a teenage girl, of which he denies. The controversial interview was picked up by every major news outlet across the globe and subjected Prince Andrew to the court of public opinion. As a result, the Duke ended up stepping down from public duties and has remained largely out of the spotlight ever since. Now a new Netflix show called ‘Scoop’ is showing all that went into the infamous interview. Producer Sam McAlister, who secured the interview and wrote the book that the film is based on, is played by Billie Piper. The movie gives a glimpse into often unseen work that goes on behind the scenes of such groundbreaking pieces of journalism. We spoke to Sam about how she secured the interview, what it was like being in the room during it, her expectations of how it would be received and her thoughts on imposter syndrome.
