Behind the Shot: The Oner 🎼 Here’s a behind the scenes look at how this almost 5 minute theatrical sequence came to life. This was all shot in one take on a stage with 6 different sets that were moved and assembled in real time. Director Rudy Mancuso wanted the chaos of the set pieces flying in and out and being put together in real time to embody the chaos that is happening in his characters life. This is the point in the film where he’s juggling three people who are important to him and lying to all of them. It was crucial that the camera never stopped to showcase that Rudy’s life never stops. Also, the light cues were syncopated to the rhythm. Any time a new light comes on and another goes off, those are perfectly timed with the music. This was a very live and theatrical approach to a montage that demanded a huge amount of preparation even though they didn’t have much time! With the work of production designer Patrick Sullivan and DP Shane Hurlbut, ASC, and gimbal operator Jason Robbins, they were able to pull this incredible sequence off. Cinematography Tip of the Day: Light & Color Meters💡🎨 Just because we are in the digital age does not mean you don’t need these tools. Shane uses his light meter to measure ratios and balance light. He also keeps a “book of light” and takes ratio readings after they’ve done a few takes of the scene and there aren’t anymore major lighting adjustments. He records those readings in his book of light so if they ever have to come back to the scene and do pick ups or match it, he has the exact ratios and can dial it in perfectly. The color temperature meter is also an essential and powerful tool for balancing HMI’s and matching sources. To match sources, you simply click “text” in the upper left corner and then you are in XY mode. Once you get the XY reading of the light, you would go into your light that at least has RGB white and you can out the X and the Y in and the light will match the source perfectly. This is huge!
