I always start with trimming the lid when making store jars. It’s affixed to the wheel with three lumps of soft clay and here, I can turn the horizontal locating flange until the body of the jar slots tightly over it. Then, I hollowing out the interior and do some overall neatening of the form, lightening and refining what was a very rapidly, and quite sloppily, thrown lid.
I then slip the jar onto the wheel and begin the real work, turning the walls, rim and the top of the lid, which fits snugly into the body, meaning I can use it like a chuck to trim it, which is handy. Before this though, I push a round bowl into the opening to correct it and make it ‘perfectly’ round, as when drying the rim had distorted somewhat.
Lastly, the foot. A well is turned in the thicker base, a bevelled edge created and my stamp is pushed into the leather hard clay, forever marking it as a vessel made by my hands.
