“Your kids wear a lot of clothes from Walmart, while you get dressed up a lot. Not a good look for you as a mom..” That statement is something I get a lot. Yes, my kids clothes mostly come from Walmart, while I buy myself clothes from other (more expensive) stores. You know why? Because I am not constantly outgrowing them like my kids are. I am not constantly spilling food and dirt all over my brand new clothes. I am not outside running around in the dirt for hours on end. I am not tripping and ripping holes in brand new clothes. I am not changing my mind daily about what colour I have randomly decided I don’t want to wear ever again. I am not a kid. My children are messy, they love to play in the dirt, and they love to spill their food. I buy them cheaper clothes, because I refuse to be the mom who yells at them for spilling a drop of ice cream on a brand new shirt. I strive to be the mom who sees them spill and says “oh no big deal!” I strive to be the mom who says “oh no worries at all! It’s a cheap shirt” when they’re teacher tells me they spilt all over an outfit while are school. I strive to be the mom who sees them playing in the dirt, not caring that they are ruining a brand new outfit. So yes, my kids mainly get clothes from Walmart. And they love it. They love being able to spill, get dirty, and outgrow clothes in a day with me not caring. I will not feel bad for buying clothes for them from Walmart, nor will I feel bad for buying myself special pieces that I have worked, and saved up for. The Drs answer? “Make sure you drink water!” COOLCOOLCOOL. OH and multiple lactation consultants told me to “just try harder” when i cried to them about not being able to b-feed my baby. I’ll tell you something: I would rather sit in my backyard with a sprinkler on and make simple, free memories, than drive an hour to the zoo, spent $200 bucks, get overstimulated and ragey and then spend 3 days recovering. I’m not saying we aren’t going to go to the zoo. But I AM saying that we often underestimate the simple things like hikes, ice cream, and playdates at the park. We also underestimate how beneficial it is for our kids to have parents who are not burnt out and overwhelmed. I want to have fun with my kids and be present with them when I CAN this summer. I have to work and so camps and childcare will be a thing. I refuse to feel guilty for working. But, that does mean that I have to be intentional about the time I get to have with them. I don’t want to spend it rushing from one thing to the next to fit it all in so that I can complete some fantasy checklist. I want my kids to remember me as present. Not 100% of the time because that’s impossible. But when I choose to truly be with them, I want them to know that I delight in them …and that can happen on a towel in the backyard. Don’t let the internet or your in-laws make you feel like you aren’t doing enough. Do what you can and do it with intention. Do what feels good. Your kids are going to remember how you made them feel, not the massive list of things you did. Every household is different. I get that. IMO, as long as both partners are getting an equal opportunity to do things that make them THEM, do what works for you. We all need, rest, breaks, connection, fun and a chance not to feel responsible. When you are in a partnership you both help one another get those things- no matter who brings home the bacon. (Also shoutout to the single parents who don’t ever get that) But too many women don’t get the chance to do it as much as their husbands because they have too much to think about and DO. Now about this sweet resort: We stayed at the Signia Hilton Bonnet Creek recently and if you are headed to Disney anytime soon you’ll want to know more about it. 1. It’s an official Disney partner hotel, located within the Disney property and is so close you can actually see multiple Disney parks from the hotel (we watched the fireworks from our room). They provide a free shuttle to the parks and you even get early park entry just like you would if you stayed on one of the Disney Resorts. I wish we knew about it when we did our big Disney Trip in the Fall because it’s so close, easy and honestly more affordable. 2. The pool area is legit. It’s not only big, has a sweet lazy river with floaties, a waterslide and beach style entry for the little ones/ mommy lazing around, but there’s always more lounge chairs than you need and sweet poolside cabanas too! It’s connected to the Walfdorf Astoria too- which means you can use their pools and facilities. We had SO much fun in the pool area, my kids didn’t want to leave. 3. There are so many food options and they are incredibly delicious. We ate at Le Luce which is easily one of the best Italian restaurants we’ve been to and completely unexpected. The chef will even take the kids to the kitchen to make their own thin crust pizza! They’ve got a delicious poolside restaurant/ bar, the most delicious buffet restaurant, and even the little deli/grocer is wonderful. We picked up grab and go breakfasts on multiple days and were supposed to find out everything is made in house (like muffins, cinnamon rolls and other yummy baked goods. The long and short of it is that I genuinely recommend you check it out if you are looking for a getaway with your family, especially if you plan to hit up DISNEY WORLD. If you are struggling, I need you to know that there is hope. I’m so thankful to the people who have shown up for me in a variety of ways (including my online community who has been patient with my new normal). A few months ago things got so dark I didn’t know if I would be able to carry on. I felt hopeless. I had to make a LOT of personal changes, changes to my work, my relationships, my expectations of myself, my priorities and my perspective of myself. It hasn’t been linear. I am not “healed” or “better” or “fixed”. I am on a journey to feeling better and it’s safe to say I have hope now. I’ve learned to listen to my body before it’s screaming at me and I’ve learned to care more about my feelings and needs than I do about everyone else’s. I wish November me could see that things would get better. She can’t so I’m telling you. But. You have got to change something. You’ve got to be okay with disappointing other people. You’ve got to see your inherent value, not just the value in what you can do for others or how you can make them happy. You’ve got to be able to ask for help and let people in. Maybe you don’t have a village. Maybe it’s not perfect. But there are people who care and people who want to help you if you let them. Let them.
