Shark ID “Roxy” Aka “Nani” (which means Beautiful in Hawaiian) 1 year ago today on an early morning while the full moon was still up. Audio on to hear @juansharks howling at the moon 🩵🐺🦈🌒 The cool sea spray in the background and the competition between Shark ID Ali’i Nikolè (Queen Nikki) and a large Galapagos shark who refused to back away made for an exciting morning. I am thrilled the sandbar sharks are back in high numbers and I can hear the humpback whales singing underwater, and spouting, breaching, and surfacing on the way out to survey the sharks. The sharks seemingly dancing to the orchestra of whales makes for an extra surreal sensory experience while monitoring the sharks @oneoceandiving 🦈 My fins are still crossed to see this much loved and adored shark back around soon I hope, and regardless of where she is or goes my only hope is that she’s able to avoid further entanglement in marine debris. Her broken jaw and mutilated dorsal fin lend to her being easily identifiable, even from above the surface. 50% of marine debris or more comes from commercial industrial fishing. Marine species entangled in discarded nets often die slowly, and such nets may continue to drift and continue to kill leading to the name “ghost nets.” One way to help curb this is by not supporting the commercial seafood industry and learning more about bycatch in long line fisheries, bottom trawling, purse seine netting, gill nets and even modern day slavery in the industry. #winter #hawaii #oahu #thingstodonorthshore #northshoreoahu #haleiwa #oneoceanhawaii #oneoceansharks #sharkIDRoxy #sharkid #sharkroxy #fullmoonparty #sharkid_alyssa
