Support for visual pleasure! The time had come to do something and I was feeling excessively nimble today so I unleashed my inner Ninja mid evening! Armed with 30 year old bamboo canes and brand new zip ties I got to work. I really wanted to support the plant more as it’s size has meant that gravity was pulling in forwards. By adding the poles I was not only able to give it a better chance of keeping its leaves intact but also enabling me to revel in a more aesthetic overall feel once in place. It’s new leaves are so big that this video doesn’t do it justice! Once again, the McDowell is a solid plant for any collector and is very forgiving. Crawlers also make it exceedingly easy for us to propagate as each node automatically roots itself Into the soil if you give it a long enough trough. New leaf Alert! I was thinking to myself “it’s been a long time” when boom! A new leaf had already emerged but was hiding behind other plants! Crikey I remember the days I wanted to collect them all! Syngoniums, or the tropical weed as I like to call it. They are like Pokémon and I did want to collect them all. However I moved onto anthuriums and stopped at about 8 different types. Now I let them roam the walls of my house and some are starting to give me some lovely more mature leaves. The jungle is growing and ever evolving so it is evidently time to trim some bits that have not grown as desired. In turn they will create new plants and so it goes the circle of addiction. After our last plant sale we had a flood of messages for people asking to do another one so…. We listened and took action! On Saturday the 1st of July 2023 from 10am-4pm we will once again be opening our doors. Indoor favourites as well as rare babies, outdoor perennials and fruit trees all grown by us at our humble abode through propagating our existing plants and trees! Good evening earthlings! I do Hope you are all well apart from the imminent return to work tomorrow… As you may know I am having a real life plant sale at my house on the 1st of July 2023 and have spent the last two nights (yes, until 3am) potting up my prop boxes in order to deliver an even larger array of tropical beauties! Initial excitement from seeing an array of over 400 plants quickly turned to dismay as I have refilled the entire greenhouse more brimming than before. In fact it is nearly impossible to walk on the floor inside! I’ll show you in my story later tonight! Your wishes are my command! It’s been a while since I talked about how to make a prop box and a lot of new comments have cornered me into making another! Shockingly I have tried to give as much detail this time without boring your tits off! So for todays lesson what you’ll need: Storage boxes - these can be stolen from your kids room by throwing away all the toys inside or by buying new ones off Amazon or at ikea! Personally I don’t make holes in them as I don’t see these as being air tight! I start with a layer of drainage incase there is too much condensation - this can be stones, perlite, leca, gravel etc - personally I use perlite as it’s cheap, light and effective! I then go in with a second layer of sphagnum moss - now you can stop here and have great success however I do like to give my props some soil mix too! The moss filters the next soil layer when mixed with water so that you don’t get any dirt at the bottom. I then add in a layer of Chucky airy soil mix - compost, bark, perlite and worm casting (If you have more soil amendments handy then go for it some like to add some activated charcoal too but as I don’t have any right now this will work fine too!) Finally I add a fluffy layer of sphagnum moss on the top. The fluffier the better as we want our cuttings to nestle nicely into these green clouds. And that’s it ! It’s as simple as that! I go ahead and add in my cuttings, give the box a spray down, close it and forget about it for a month! Prop boxes are a great inexpensive way to propagate, super successfully and save on space as they stack! Hope this helped!
