Everything started with the Temple of Romulus (son of the emperor Massentius, 4th century AD) in the Roman Forum. When the Roman Empire fell, the temple was abandoned. The Pope Felix IV in the year 526 converted this temple into a church: the first Christian church in the Roman Forum! The temple became the church of the Saints Cosma and Damiano, two brother which were doctors, persecuted and killed by the Romans because they were Christians. Through the centuries the church suffered the floodings and humidity of the area. When is the Trevi fountain cleaned? ⤵️ The cleaning of the fountain takes place twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. This cleaning is quicker and it includes the collection of the coins. It starts at 8AM and it takes a couple of hours. Once every two weeks (on Mondays) there is a complete cleaning. Which cornice is real and which one is painted? Is the dome a real dome? Andrea Pozzo, who painted the ceiling, would be so proud of your confusion. He put together very sophisticated mathematical calculations in order to fool the human eye. And he’s been fooling visitors’ eyes since 400 years.. This fresco depicts the glory of St Ignazio, who was the founder of the Jesuit order The Jesuits have always been very good communicators and good at evangelizing and converting people to Christianity. When the church of San Nicola in Carcere was built in the 1100s, it incorporated three Ancient Roman temples from the 3rd century BC! These temples were: Temple of Spes, Temple of Juno, Temple of Janus. The church was built on top of the basements of these temples, which you can see outside the church, as well as inside. If you walk underground you will see the ancient Roman street level between the temples, and the actual basements of the temples! You are in front of the fountain of the lovers, Trevi fountain’s best kept secret! According to the legend, the couples that drink from this fountain will be in love and loyal forever! This tradition started when soldiers had to leave for the war, leaving their fiancées behind The night before the departure the two lovers would come to this fountain. The girl would bring a brand new glass (never used before), fill it up with this water and offer it to her boyfriend. Then the glass had to be broken, to make sure she wouldn’t lose her loved one Legends aside, this little fountain was made to allow people to drink the water of the fountain, which would be otherwise impossible to reach from other points of the Trevi fountain. What’s the story behind this statue? ⤵️ This was the statue that the emperor Constantine made for the basilica of Massentius in the Roman Forum. It was a giant statue (12meters high/39 feet!) and the only fragments that made it to this day are exhibited in the Capitoline museum: the head, arm, knee, the feet.. So how are we looking at this whole statue today? Everything started from those fragments. The rest of the statue is lost, but it was digitally reconstructed based on those fragments and a deep study around them. This project came to this beautiful result thanks to the collaboration of @sovrintendenzacapitolina (Rome Cultural Heritage Department), @fondazioneprada and @factumarte. A mysterious museum is in this church ⤵️ This is the church of the Sacro Cuore del Suffragio. In Rome we call it “little Duomo of Milan”, because we don’t have churches like this here, so it makes us think of Milan 😊 Anyways, there is an incredible gem inside this church: the Museum of the Souls of the Purgatory It is a tiny little room with a collection of visible evidence that the souls of the Purgatory left while establishing a communication with the living people. The Purgatory is where the souls are transitioning before they get to Paradise. In the Purgatory the souls wash away their sins. And the evidence in this museum tell us about these souls that got in contact with the living people and asked them for prayers, masses and good actions to help them atone for the sins they committed on earth. While establishing contact some of these souls left a sign, most of the times are fire handprint on books, clothes, walls.. What is this place? Read caption ⤵️ This is Palazzo Colonna, a palace belonging to the Colonna family since the Middle Ages and still inhabited by them today! But who are the Colonna’s? 🤔 You need to know that in Rome through the centuries there has been a lot of noble families, and each one of them had their family palace. The biggest one is the magnificent Palazzo Colonna! The Colonna’s have been such an important family for the history of Rome. To give you an example: 👉🏼 Pope Martino V was a Colonna, and he was the Pope that brought back to Rome the Pope seat in the 1400s. The Pope seat in fact had been for almost 100 years in Avignon, France. This means that Rome returned being an important city and raised from its ashes thanks to that. What would Rome look like if Martino V wouldn’t have done that? Certainly very different! 😮 💣 What about the cannon ball? It was accidentally shot in 1849 during the Battle of the Janiculum hill between the French troops (supporting the Pope) and the army of the Roman Republic (led by Garibaldi) The French troops aimed at the Garibaldi troops on the Quirinal hill, which is just behind this palace. But this cannon ball ended up here by mistake!
