7 mile bridge… can you walk it?! We did!!! Now I wouldn’t encourage you to go walk it recreationally on an afternoon 🤣🤣 but we were pleasantly surprised with how it went! The shoulder wasn’t huge but it was enough room we felt safe. We made sure to go right at sunrise (but not too early that it was still dark) and that made it so we were off before the 9am traffic. We only had a couple people shake their heads at us 🤔🤣 We used our flags and waved em up high when the big groups of cars came. We didn’t have a single close call and for that we are thankful!!! We received sooo many comments and messages before this stretch - we weren’t sure what to expect. The @East Coast Greenway (which is the route we’ve been following down the east coast) tells you to go on Card Sound road. After talking with locals & looking at google maps satellite view we decided to tackle US 1 on a Sunday morning. We were very surprised to say the least!!!! Hoka Pair 2: Gaviota We initially weren’t sure how we felt about them as they were much bulkier than our previous Speedgoats We still wouldn’t rate them as our top shoe but we would give them a solid 8/10 on the rating scale. They were a little too cushiony for us when it came to rocks etc and they got wet easily when walking through tall grass. They were wide though which allowed your foot to swell throughout the day and it didn’t feel like you wanted to rip your shoes off come 5pm. Taking it one day at a time is the best thing we can do. While this is our second walk across America and third thru-hike, it’s our first time in the summer. We’ve made it to the end of July and so far everyone has been doing really well. Here are the things that help us the most: 🐾 start before the sun is up, that way we can get 15-20 miles in before noon 🐾 cooling gear! Ruffwear is our go to and has been a HUGE game changer when it comes to the dogs staying cool so that they can last longer in the heat 🐾 Mushers Paw Wax we will NEVER go without it! We rarely put Nemo’s booties on because the wax has helped to keep her paws protected. That being said, if you walk in the heat of the day check the cement with the back of your hand or foot for at least 8 seconds! 🐾💦 most importantly make sure you and your four legged friend stay HYDRATED !!! #walkacrossamerica #thruhike #optoutside #dogswhohike #dogsinsummer #cooling #ruffwear #hikingdog

We kind of had a small feeling this day might come on this trip… but we were hoping it wouldn’t be true. Timmy (our cart) had his last fall yesterday. Luckily, we were on the side of the road and a kind man named Mr. Parker was working on his daughters lawn. He offered up help, advice and ultimately gave us a ride into town so we could get a hotel and game plan. We are really bummed to have to swap out Timmy and he will always hold a special place in our heart. We were going to just say goodbye but have decided to send him to our parents house. We will see if we can fix him up when we have more time & resources to spend on trying to see what’s wrong. Luckily it happened right as a heat wave came through and we would’ve been in a long rural stretch with no resources. While we are following the @East Coast Greenway it’s important to note that it is not a fully completed greenway. The biggest pro is that they’ve have figured out the best roads for you to take when you’re not on the path so you don’t have to worry about it. That doesn’t mean that you will have roads with shoulders the whole time though!! Doing something like a walk across America where you walk on roads isn’t like the normal thru-hike trails because it’s not a legitimate trail. You always have to your head on a swivel because cars are coming at you and they may not always be paying attention. It can be very dangerous and we HIGHLY recommend reflective gear!!! Our main form of sleeping on our walks is tent camping but sometimes we get hotels. 🤷‍♀️ When do we get hotels? If it’s bad weather, really really hot for multiple days in a row (because of the dogs), or if we are in a city and can’t find other accommodations. 💸How do we find the best deals? A 7+ month adventure means you gotta ball on a budget! Sometimes that means the hotels can be questionable so we try to do a lot of research beforehand to find the best one and the best deal. We use apps like @priceline @hopper @tripadvisor and @hoteltonight to score the best deal and make sure we won’t have bugs biting us in the night or blood on the walls! Oh and don’t forget it has to be dog friendly! & Matt says it’s a bonus for him if there is a continental breakfast 😋 The best is when you score a hotel like this one!
