"Color deceives continually. To study color is to study deception." - Josef Albers 🌈 What is simultaneous contrast & how does it impact our perception of colour when painting? Fundamentally, it means that the colours we see are impacted by the colours nearby. Understanding how colours interact means you can use the knowledge to your advantage & make parts of your painting appear either more vibrant or subdued by placing them next to other colours. For example adding a colour next to its complimentary makes it more vivid & can create a focal point. Or you can use the effect to suggest depth as warm colours might advance & cool colours recede. It’s also good to be aware of how simultaneous contrast warps the way we see colour in what we’re painting, either from life or photography. Some techniques to try & help your eyes see the true colour are to look at it out of the corner of your eye whilst looking at nearby colours, squint (though this can be a better trick to seeing value), or cut a small viewfinder out of a neutrally coloured paper to eliminate the surrounding colours & stop them interfering with the ‘true’ colour… whatever that means. In reality a colour can never really be seen as it truly is … scientifically, physically, because our visual perception makes colour the incredibly relative. The positive to this is that it makes colour the most playful, subjective, & personalized element in art. #ColorTheory #ArtistsPalette #SimultaneousContrast #PaintersInsight #ColorPerception #VisualArts #ColorMagic #ArtisticVision #ColorInteraction #PaintingTips #ColorHarmony #ArtistsOnColor #CreativeContrast #ColorfulArt #ColorInfluence #ArtExploration #PalettePlay #ColorMixing #VisualImpact #artistictechnique
