A month after Independence was declared, the British invaded New York City, seeking to make it their base of operations after being kicked out of Boston. In August of that year they land in Brooklyn and commence what is known alternatively as the Battle of Brooklyn or Long Island. It was a disaster for Washington and his army, the only saving grace was a regiment of 400 Marylanders who were able to hold off the British long enough for the army to retreat to Brooklyn Heights. There are little memorials to these men scattered around Park Slope, Prospect Park, Gowanus and Carroll Gardens.#nyc #history #nychistory #brooklyn #revolutionarywar
