CHARTINGGG! 🤯 It can be so hard to find time to chart but it's an essential part of your job. You have probably heard it said “if you didn't chart it, it didn't happen”. Some shifts, it can feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water…and then, you have to chart it all. But here are some tips to keep you moving efficiently & keep you leaving on-time! (or closer to it! 🙂) Tips for charting: –Chart as you go! – Try to chart patient care and interventions as you do them. You want to avoid saving charting to the end of your shift as much as possible! – Make a to-do list! – I will always remember a nurse I shadowed as a student. She made a to-do list, prioritized her tasks, and made herself a PLAN. She obviously didn't stick to the schedule exactly because, well, we are dealing with real humans & acute status changes, BUT it really helped her stay on track and tie up loose ends before she left. – STAY ORGANIZED – Keeping your area clean & organized will help you chart more quickly. Instead of saying “where did I write down those patients' vital signs?”, know exactly where you wrote them, or even better, document them in the computer RIGHT after taking them. Charting head-to-toe assessments and interventions in the room is KEY, so try to do it as much as you possibly & realistically can. Remember, as a nurse, your priority is to provide safe and effective patient care. You are also there to protect yourself & the care you give– and charting DOES protect you, as annoying as it can be. Remember your notes, double check you’ve completed it all before leaving, and then feel confident in what you’ve documented.
