Do you prefer Size A or Size D threads when wrapping your fishing rods? Sure, it may depend on the rod you’re building, the part of the build you’re working on, the type of thread and the application of the rod, but these 4 things remain true overall. ⬇️ 1: Size A thread is thinner in diameter than Size D thread. 2: When packed correctly, then epoxied, individual threads of Size A are much harder to see than Size D. This creates a much cleaner and painted on look, both on guide and decorative wraps (in a good way). When your decorative wraps are wrapped and packed well, people will ask, “Where did you get that sticker?” in reference to the wrap. That is a compliment, they just don’t know it. 3: Size D is faster and easier to wrap on guides, especially over the foot. This is simply due of the larger size of the thread. 4: Size A thread is stronger than Size D thread. Being smaller, it leads to more revolutions turned on the blank, compared to the same distance wrapped with Size D thread. Bill Falconer, left, is a proponent for wrapping Size A threads on guides. Although it takes longer, Bill is meticulous with his rod builds and prefers the seamless look of Size A. *Both thread sizes are interchangeable on most guide wraps. For the most part, what size thread you choose is personal preference that comes from your desired look and testing of the two sizes!
