Let’s Unpack a Glucometer Kit! Picture this: you’ve been asked by your preceptor to check a glucose, which you've only observed before. Cue the anxiety and the phrase, “what do I do, again?” swimming through your mind. I’ve said this before, but unpacking frequently used tools, devices, or clinical supplies and becoming accustomed to them is SO helpful. Always ask your preceptor (if there’s downtime) to do this and if it’s allowed (we like to avoid opening limited stock if it’s not being used on a patient!). But the learning that can come from this is GREAT, so ask! You can always refer back to these “unpacking” reels if you can’t! A few notes about Glucometer Kits: ⭐Glucometer is JUST what it sounds like “gluc” = sugar, “meter” = measurement. So you’re MEASURING a patient’s BLOOD SUGAR with this device ⭐The QC feature is there for a reason. Be sure to QC as asked and prompted, log it in a book or wherever your unit chooses to do so, and don’t skip it! There are particular instructions where you’ll use those tiny dropper bottles and you’ll need to scan the products. If you need help…ask! ⭐Check expiration dates! Don’t assume other people have already done this. If everyone assumed that, no one would EVER check. This goes for all products and supplies. ⭐Glucometers can be temperamental 😂– seriously! If there’s not enough blood, the strip is inserted too soon, or you don’t follow the right order of events, it’ll have you perform the task again. Get to know your unit’s device, flip through the manual during downtime as a student, and practice with it. You won’t have that downtime as a nurse, so use it to learn now!
