Nonspeaking autism means that an autistic person doesn't use speech/ mouth words to communicate. The term “nonverbal” implies that they don't use language, but this isn't always the case. Many nonverbal autistic people understand speech and writing. Michael was diagnosed with autism, nonverbal, level 2 at 13 months old. His autism, was regressive. Regressive autism is a condition in which a child appears to develop typically but suddenly begins to lose speech and social skills. Signs and symptoms are usually seen between the ages of 15 and 30 months. The loss of these skills can be rapid or slow. It is usually followed by a lengthy period of stagnant skill progression. It’s vital that a child with regressive autism receives the proper diagnosis early on. Once diagnosed, parents and caregivers can learn the appropriate therapies needed. Keep in mind all children with autism are different, and progress will be dependent on many factors. Various studies showed around 25-30 percent of kids with regressive ASD stop speaking after they start to say some words, usually before reaching the age of two. Some children lose social development instead of language, and some lose both. Here are some early signs I’ve detected in Michael between 11-13 months old: * Avoided & didn’t like eye contact * Lost one word, daddy * Failed to respond when his name was called * Unable to point at objects or things of interest, or failure to show interest * Hand leading * Lost ability to wave hi / bye * Generally wanted to be alone * Tip Toe walking * Failed to understand or acknowledge other people’s feelings, as well as their own * Obsessive interests * Shows atypical reactions or under-sensitivity to feel of being hurt or sick * Avoided physical contact * Demonstrated little attention to safety and is greatly unaware of danger #heartbreak #sad #emotional #emotionalmoments #emotionalvideo #struggle #autism #parenting #neurodivergent #nonspeaking #signlanguage #toddler #representationmatters #cute #handsome #autismawareness #autismjourney #autismparenting #nonverbal #fyp #explorepage

Imagine never ever knowing what’s wrong w/ your child💔. Ever. I think it’s his tooth?. His entire life, he’s never been able to convey his aches & pains. Like we can. Only through his screams & SIBs(self injurious behaviors) do we start the never ending task of: how can we help him? I hate this for him. Taking him anywhere, it will be just as traumatic or worse. But the other option is this…. #helpless #nonspeaking #notalldisabilitiesarevisible #reality 💔💔💔.

#Homeschooling provides a safer, more controlled, and value-consistent educational environment for Michael, addressing our concerns about his unique needs and our family's preferences. Here are the reasons why I believe homeschooling is the best choice for us: 1. Protection from Abuse: Michael’s challenges in communication could hinder his ability to report or even perceive harmful behaviors — ranging from physical to emotional abuse. 2. Prevention of Inappropriate Discipline: In school environments, Michael faces a significant risk of being disciplined or managed by staff who are likely not adequately trained to understand his unique needs. This can lead to neglect, inappropriate responses, and potential physical or emotional trauma, with a high possibility of these incidents going unreported. 3. Complete Educational Oversight: It offers me full authority over the curriculum and educational content, allowing Michael to bypass certain teaching methods and subjects that I find objectionable and that are increasingly prevalent in our school system. 4. Reinforcing Family Values: It enables us to strengthen our family bonds and ensures that Michael's education is in line with our specific family values and beliefs, especially important at a time when these are often contested in mainstream education. 5. Personalized Socialization: I can selectively manage the social settings and peer groups Michael engages with. This approach allows us to promote healthier social interactions that resonate with our family's values. 6. Inclusion Challenges: After investing much time and energy advocating for Michael's rights and inclusion, I am reluctant to entrust his care to a system where children like him are still often separated from mainstream classes. This separation denies him the fair education and is not in the best interests of children like Michael, who should have equal opportunities to learn alongside their peers, an experience crucial for his development. #parenting #autism #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivation #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #toddler #cute #education

It's heartbreaking to see him encounter misunderstandings or unfair judgment, but these moments are also opportunities for growth. Michael will learn, little by little, how to navigate a world that doesn’t always understand him, and we’ll continue to advocate for him every step of the way. For us, these experiences force us to adapt, grow, and prepare for the complexities that come with raising a child in an often unkind and unaccommodating world. While these moments sting in the present, they are part of the bigger picture—helping Michael develop the skills he’ll need to move through life with confidence, and helping us strengthen our resolve to support him through it all. 📌 Despite Michael’s communication barriers and language challenges, I make it a priority to take my time and explain every situation to him. By taking the time to explain things to him I’m also reinforcing that his thoughts and feelings matter. Just because he faces challenges with language doesn’t mean he isn’t absorbing, processing, and or understanding what’s happening. 👑 Catch all the on-the-go Exclusive Stories on the Subscribers’ Page. 📔eBook on Joint Attention & collection of activities, link in BIO 🔗 📔[NEW] eBook on a collection of activities for Speech Exercises, link in BIO 🔗 ⚠️ This is a glimpse into our journey with my nonspeaking autistic son, documenting his progress, and offering insights for anyone who may benefit, learn, or find inspiration. ⚠️ Our communication and co-regulation approach is well-considered and fits our situation. Thursdays are Spelling Days: RECORD ME I spent the drive back from Ingrid’s office crying my eyes out. I couldn’t help it. Gabe told me something very clearly that simultaneously broke my heart and made me so happy. Happy to know his thoughts and feelings. Happy to know that he is getting so good at spelling! The heartbreaking part is what he spelled and why. Gabe had another difficult day at school with transitioning. I brought this up in his session with Ingrid. Gabe spelled: Not my best place to find help. He was referring to school. Ingrid asked him directly if he communicates with anyone at school like he does with us. He spelled: No. I jumped in because I wanted to acknowledge his feelings and also remind him that his teacher Mr. Gardiner who works with him once a week in the weight room communicates with him in a way that makes me feel he understands Gabe. They have normal interactions and he presumes competence very naturally. I can tell that Gabe feels that from him and gets so much out of their one on one time together. Gabe spelled: Record me. I was not sure what he was going to spell next. Ingrid asked him if he meant that he wants to be recorded? He said yes. Then she asked him why. Gabe spelled that he wants people to see the real me. Ingrid then asked him to elaborate about what he wants people to see about him and then I asked him if he meant he wants us to record him spelling so we can show his school the real him? He spelled: yes Gabe’s demeanor changed at this point. He was in a great mood for most of the session, but when he said this last thing about wanting people at school to know the “real” him he appeared sad. Often Gabe will act happy even if he shares something upsetting. I was surprised by this. I told him as we walked from the office to the car that I promise I will keep telling them at school that he understands and wants choices, all the things he’s asked for. I will need to talk to Ingrid and Gabe further about recording sessions for the purpose of what he wants school to understand about him. I hope that he can elaborate further next week. #autism #nonverbal #spelling #presumecompetence #nonspeaking @Caroline Kiernan112 @nicolegottesmann

Across generations and within our Korean culture, parenting styles often followed an authoritative approach with punitive punishments considered the norm. As a result, I've consciously chosen to embrace gentle and conscious parenting to break these generational cycles. Every day, I make a deliberate choice to be mindful and gentle with my son. I must admit that practicing these parenting approaches with Michael isn't very challenging, as he possesses an innate calmness and he’s incredibly sweet. Even in moments when he tests his boundaries, his natural disposition makes the process smoother. Having said that, I want to dispel the stereotype that surrounds gentle parenting or conscious parenting. This approach doesn't mean the absence of boundaries or consequences. Instead, it signifies that boundaries and natural consequences are established and enforced with empathy and understanding, all with the ultimate aim of nurturing a healthy parent-child relationship. #cute #toddler #parenting #autism #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent

Michael's exposure to the wide array of personalities and behaviors exhibited by children from different walks of life is often limited and carefully phased in. This is critical for Michael, who is in a key stage of behavioral development where watching peers and adults significantly influences his learning and the formation of his own behaviors. Being in an environment with individuals whose values and behaviors may not align with ours, poses a risk of not only Michael adopting undesirable behaviors but also the potential for him to lose confidence and interest in socializing. This is one of many reasons why homeschooling is ideal for us; it allows us to closely monitor and regulate his social interactions, ensuring his confidence is strengthened, not eroded, during his critical formative years. ‼️Contrary to popular belief, proper socialization extends beyond the boundaries of school environments and gatherings with peers of the same age. Social and emotional growth is greatly influenced by a range of life experiences, such as family dynamics, as well as by intentionally connecting with like-minded families. 📲 Social media platforms have proven to be invaluable tools in facilitating these connections and discovering communities and families with shared values. We are in the process of connecting in our area, but we do so with careful consideration, and that can take quite some time! 📌Context on Observation No.2: Whenever another child displays unkind behavior towards Michael, I refrain correcting the child, especially if their parent is there, as it's not my role to discipline someone else's child. In the situation where a child was throwing mulch at Michael, I simply just positioned myself between the two, thereby stopping the child from targeting Michael and ensuring that Michael didn't learn the behavior as acceptable. Given Michael's present difficulty in understanding complex social dynamics and advocating for himself, placing him in a a environment to confront these conflict of interest is unnecessary at this point in his development. My priority is to navigate Michael away from negative situations, and I resort to other measures only if this initial choice is not successful. #heartwarming #parenting #autism #signlanguage #ASL #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivation #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #exposures #roadschooling #homeschooling #unschooling

This is just another example of why creating emotional, hands-on experiences in real-life learning environments, along with the need for patience and effective communication in caregiving and teaching, plays a pivotal role in the progress and growth of nonspeaking autistic children, such as Michael. The challenges of transitions, communication, and emotional regulation are intricately interconnected. These challenges in communication and emotional regulation are typical aspects of every child’s ongoing developmental journey as they mature. While it’s common for most children, whether they are autistic or neurotypical, to display emotional outbursts when their desires aren’t met during transitions, what sets autistic young children apart, especially those who are nonspeaking, is their unique struggle with comprehending verbal language and the privilege of being able to verbally express themselves. This challenge can significantly contribute to emotional dysregulation, impacting them differently than neurotypical children who can quite literally, self-advocate. Despite his language challenges, Michael has consistently demonstrated an impressive ability to transition smoothly and display a higher level of emotional control compared to his peers, especially when communication is established. Over the years, I’ve come to recognize that his big reactions haven’t, primarily, stemmed from wanting to get his way; rather, they arise from his challenge in processing and comprehending situations. When his communication needs are met, his natural inclination has always been to accept and, at times, even seek compromises. For this, I am truly thankful for his innate character and personality. 🔗Autism Hoodie ➡️ under Branded Merch 👉🏻I’m wearing size L for Adults 👉🏻Michael is wearing size S for Kids #cute #emotional #toddler #parenting #autism #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivation #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent

Mondays are Spelling Days! Gabe: “STARTING TO SEE HOW HARD IS BE ME” Today was one of the most difficult days for both myself and Gabe. I didn’t send him to school today. I knew he needed to be home based on some unusual behavior that has been going on. He is not willing to leave a certain area of the house, even to go to sleep at night. This is becoming a habit. At the beginning of Gabe’s session he chose to chat. Honestly, this is very difficult to share and I am doing so because I think I need support too. This is excruciating because I can’t do anything to make it better for him. Gabe spelled: “ANGRY” Then the most heartbreaking thing came next: “STARTING TO SEE HOW HARD IS BE ME” “SORE HEART” Caroline showed up at this point and we shared with Ingrid some of things going on at home. Mainly transitions. We asked him why he feels the need to stay in one place. We asked him if he’s feeling scared or anxious about something. Gabe spelled: “SORRY” “SCHOOL” We then talked about reasons someone might have these feelings about school, like maybe there is test coming up or something else that they are worried about. She recommended he see a therapist and we are on board. I hope he will start to feel more understood soon. I literally don’t know how much I can take on an emotional level lately. Ever since Gabe started spelling I’ve been experiencing a lot of feelings with such intensity. Im devastated, disturbed, excited, hopeful, hopeless. All at once! I’m basically crying a lot. This isn’t about me, but I need to get it together to help him. #autism #apraxia #nonspeaking #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #autismo #spelling #rpm #s2c #aac @nicolegottesmann

Michael has a deep fascination for cars & trucks — & all forms of vehicles. With that in mind, thought it was a good idea to surprise him with the biggest Fedex delivery truck out in front of our driveway and capture his excitement….. but instead, I learned that he is terrified of it up-close. 🚚🤷🏻‍♀️ Despite it not turning out as I imagined, it still offered a perfect chance for me to introduce the concept of expressing "don't like" instead of his usual "no" or "all done." Expanding his vocabulary to convey the same thoughts or feelings is incredibly beneficial to his journey in self-advocacy. This also illustrates the importance of including children like my son, simply in our everyday moments — even in seemingly minor events like receiving a delivery. It's in these moments that I was able to better understand his preferences, and also uncover opportunities to help turn potential negative experiences into positive ones for the future. For example, his strong emotional reaction to keeping a distance from the truck, provided the ideal opportunity for us to introduce new methods for him to express his dislikes. I emphasize 'us' because this approach may not be universally effective for all autistic children, but it aligns with the temperament and nature that may be like my son. ⚠️ Lastly, Pacifers‼️ His pacifier serves as a tool to provide him with the necessary oral sensory input he seeks. While Michael does not have ‘Pica’, it’s equally important to understand that any chewing or mouthing of objects poses a health risk and is always a safety matter first; and any other concerns are secondary. #cute #toddler #parenting #autism #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #inspiration #motivate #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent

Thursdays are Spelling Days: SAME STRESS. AM I ABLE SOMEDAY BE HEARD AT SCHOOL? That’s what Gabe spelled as soon as we got to Ingrid’s office. I asked him if he meant anyone in particular at school that he feels unheard by or everyone. He spelled EVERYONE. My heart hurts bad right now. I was trying so hard not to cry, but I couldn’t help it. I told him I’m so sorry that he is experiencing this pain. Again, I told him I’m working on it. After he spelled this he became very happy and vocal and hasn’t stopped since. He got all of that out. I’m so proud of him, but beyond that I need to figure out how to help him faster. We talked about what happened at school this week and how difficult it was for him. I filled Ingrid in that he had been unwilling or able to sit down in class for a large portion of the day on Tuesday. He didn’t take his coat off, or go on the community outing. He struggled to do many things this week. He isn’t being heard. We had a few minutes left and he said that he was done talking about this. Then I asked him about his hair. I knew it wouldn’t take a lot of time to find out whether he wants it cut or not. He circled with gusto that he wants it long and then he spelled that for practice. I found out a lot in this session. As sad as it all is, this is helpful and this is progress! #autism #apraxia #aac #spelling #rpm #s2c #autismawareness #autismacceptance #nomverbal #nonverbalautism #nonspeaking
