When this is finished, I will look back and see tens of thousands of tiny moments like this one, each one a pause, a small concentration of focus and energy. Each moment is only fleeting, in isolation completely forgotten, inconsequential. But added together all of those tiny efforts contribute to something much bigger. If I’m ever having a difficult day, I try to remember this. Even if just one or two small, fleeting, seemingly inconsequential moments from that difficult day can contribute to something bigger, then that’s a success. Even if it’s just maintaining, doing a load of laundry, adding a few pencil strokes to a drawing, going for a walk. They all add up. Amongst the complete chaos of dismantling my entire studio and editing suite, and boxing up all my worldy possession, in a whirlwind three weeks I created this drawing ‘Chameleon’. The deadline was tight; I wanted to fit one more drawing before the mammoth move - 3 hours north to a new house and a new town. But I set my mind to the task, and I was strict with myself - I had to draw every day for as long as it took. I had to push through the late nights, the lack of motivation, the house move stress. And it payed off. Two days later we were crammed into a van with the cats and on the road to our new home. Learn from the masters: place the focus on one eye and make the other to lower contrast and less clear. How can you do this? One simple trick is to paint the eyes like normal, but then use sandpaper or a palette knife to scrape down and soften the eye that’s not the focus. In addition you can use slightly more detail and contrast on the eye you want to bring into focus. What’s the benefit? It reflects nature and offers the viewer a more satisfying point of interest. In addition it can offer a more emotional connection. How so? Next time you have a conversation with someone try to observe your natural focus. When you look at someone’s eyes, notice how you focus on just one at a time. We can direct the viewer to do the same by choosing the focus for them. In addition I think you can add more emotional impact with this attention. Bonus tip: create contrasting emotions with the eyes to infuse the emotional transition of your story into the subject’s expression. For example, paint one eye with a happy expression and the other with a sad expression. If the happy eye is in focus the viewer may sense the unease of the subtler sad eye long before they recognize it consciously. Only upon further inspection will they discover the cause of conflicting emotions. Have you ever noticed this trick? How I like to start a portrait: Start with toned paper - this makes it easy to fill in space quickly. Draw the total egg shape of the head to define the outer limits and a general proportion. Mark the halfway point and add the eye sockets. Add the general nose structure. Add the general mouth structure. Fill in general shadow forms. Fill in general highlight forms. By this point there should already be a solid resemblance to the model! Then it’s time to start refining. Replying to @Murmurilka Do proportional measurements only apply to beautiful, symmetrical, model faced gods? No. There’s a commonality that can be found in all faces and used as a structural basis to build your portraits. How’s that possible? Most people have a skull under their face which leads to consistency in the general structure and measurable structures in portraits. But how could you make a portrait look like the unique individual if you’re just measuring everything? Many relative measurements apply to nearly everyone - despite the fact that all faces are unique - because the general structure remains consistent while smaller details that shape the individuality change. Amazing, right? For example, if you use the nose to measure vertical lengths of the face, the measurements will generally remain the same across a wide variety of faces even though each individual nose is one of a kind. That’s exactly why relative measurements are so powerful! They remain consistent across a variety of different subjects, while allowing for the subtle variations that create individuality. With that said, my ultimate goal is not to capture people exactly as they are. Instead I strive to flatter them. Isn’t that insulting to the model? Would you be insulted if someone was able to see all of the characteristics that make you unique, good and bad, and still portray you in a flattering light? It’s not insulting at all, it’s really the only way to portray someone with reverence. Besides, even if you copy someone exactly as they are, you’re necessarily making editorial decisions with how you portray them.
