I recently paid another visit to the incredible Dunino Den! A site of ancient Druid, pagan worship. The den itself, accessed by a woodland path, is on two levels. On the upper level is a rock-cut well and nearby carved footprint. Some claim this spot was used for human sacrifice by druids, although there is no evidence for this. Uneven stone steps descend to a natural, burnside amphitheatre with Celtic knotwork and crosses carved into the rock walls, and hundreds of coins wedged into nearby cracks. Offerings of ribbons, buttons and other craftwork have been left hanging from trees A footprint carved into the rock next to the well gives us an insight into the importance of the site. Carved footprints were used during inauguration rituals, such as the anointing of kings. Please don’t leave anything that your brought with you in the Den, if you do feel you must leave an offering please make sure it is biodegradable❤️🌳 “Leave only footprints, take only memories. Please don’t leave anything here that you brought with you. For the health of the trees on this wonderful site. If you feel you must leave a token, please use a strip of biodegradable cotton, tied very loosely” sources: atlasobscura.com, historyhit.co, sobt.co.uk #andythehighlander #highlandertours #scotland #scottishhistory #edinburgh #outlander #glasgow #whisky #history #highlands #scottish #kilt #greatkilt #scottishtourguide #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #tartan #druid #pagan #duninoden
