My buddy and I call this hole the latte bend! If you see a nice frothy layer of foam next to faster flowing water, you better toss a fly in there. Trout use the foam for protection and food. Bugs also get caught in the foam thinking they can land on it, and the trout easily pick them off as they sink through the foam. Trout love hiding under trees, especially if there is some depth. I’m using a fly called a double trouble, natural brown. It’s from @LivelyLegzFlyFishing . A great fly to use in the rain. When the water flow increases, the nymphs are on the move. They use this opportunity to move to new feeding grounds. If they don’t move on purpose, they get pushed out due to the turbulent increase. I also explain one trick when retrieving the fish; don’t reel in your flyline / leader connection. The knot/loop doesn’t glide smoothly through the eyelets of your rod. So if the fish runs, the knot could cause resistance and cause immediate drag ripping the fly out of the fish’s mouth. Try not to reel in your leader! If you’re exploring a small creek, look for over hanging trees. This usually causes the creek to be deeper in that area. Chances are, trout will be hiding under it. There are some holes meant for euro jigging. This was one of them. Flyfishers tend to bring smaller rods when fishing smaller creeks, I do too, but I wouldn’t be caught without my 3wt 10’ LRS from @Douglas Fly Fishing . Rule number 1; If you know this bridge, don’t burn spot it. The reason for not burning it isn’t bc i don’t want other anglers not to have the opportunity to catch fish, but more so to keep the traffic and pressure down. These aren’t private waters, if it’s fished for 12 hours a day, all week, the trout tend to head downstream looking for a less pressured hole. Plus, there is a little bit of “find it yourself” kind of mentality. Flyfishers spend hundreds of dollars on guides to get them fish. When their spots are freely given away, they lose income that helps feed their family. Respect the fish and respect the guides. There have been some gear that change my workflow on the water. I never know what to do with the flies I’m taking off. I don’t like the Velcro patch on my vest because my flies that are barbless fall off Velcro easily, and the barbed flies are a pain to get out of the Velcro. I don’t like putting them back in the container in my vest bc they are wet and mold up. Recently I’ve been using the magband to hold all flies, the ones I’m taking off and the ones I about to tie on. Having them all on there works fine, but having a place to store the wet ones while they dry is more efficient. Enter stage left the stash tray from @Lid Rig I keep it on my hat, throw the old flies up there, and at the end of the day, they are dry, and I place them back in their containers. Work flow is important on the water. Lidrig has really helped me become more efficient.
